The Marlborough Forest is a multi-use, 8000+ Hectare tract of land located slightly West of North Gower. Recently purchased by the City of Ottawa, it boasts a network of trails used by hikers, ATV enthusiasts, and snowmobilers alike. Though apparently not actively maintained by the city, the trails are typically in good shape. Be aware though they can be somewhat wet and soft due to the swampy nature of the area. There is a small loop trail available for family hikes, where the kids can see ducks and beaver lodges from the shoreline. Be forewarned hunting is apparently permitted in this area - so choose your dates carefully before heading out. It should be noted the Rideau Trail also bisects this forest, and the trail head can serve as an excellent access point to the Rideau Trail. Of course, it is important to bring a map and compass/GPS, since trail markings are sometimes confusing and the network of ATV and Snowmobile trails often intersect the main trails, providing many opportunities to 'lose' the main trail. |
