The K&P Trail was originally maintained by the Mississippi Valley Authority, but is apparently now owned by Renfrew County. It was created as part of a North American initiative to convert old railway lines no longer in use to usable trail space. Once identified as a potential railway conversion, the land was purchased from the railway and the K&P trail was born. Roughly 40 kms long, it is a multi-use trail used by hikers, cyclists, ATV enthusiasts, snowmobilers, and even the odd car (2 passed by us during our hike ('01)). The trail surface is mainly gravel and the trail itself is mostly flat with little incline. As a result, it is ideal for novice hikers who are looking for an opportunity for a 'good' hike without the challenges of hilly terrain or wilderness trail surfaces. Children especially seem to appreciate it's level of ease, and enjoy the many ponds and small lakes with all the fascinations and treasures to be found there. Be forewarned the area is generally marshy and wet, and as a result the mosquitoes can be quite difficult at times so bring plenty of bug juice. Also, the trail head is difficult to find so be sure and consult a reliable map, or refer to one of the links below for directions. |
